Devarattam Tamil Movie Review:
Ever since he made his debut in Kutti Puli, Muthaiya has been making the same film again and again. His hero (here, it is a miscast Gautham Karthik) will be an angry, young man; the villain (FEFSI Vijayan, in this film) will be the most feared, most violent man in the place; and circumstances will force the hero to take on the villain and vanquish him. The only thing you look forward to from this director’s films is which relationship he chooses – mother in Kutti Puli, father-in-law in Komban, grandmother in Marudhu, sister in Kodiveeran.

But even here, Devarattam is only mildly different. Since has already used up the thangachi sentiment in Kodiveeran, he goes for the akka sentiment. An akka (Vinodhini) who is aatha to the hero! And while at it, he decides to take a leaf out of Kadaikutty Singam, and gives us half-a-dozen akkas, though barring one none register. But hey, if having so many sisters made the family audience line up for Pandiraj’s film, it should work for Muthaiya, too, right?

And what’s a mainstream film if there is no ‘message’! And so, he chooses to include an angle that has topical relevance – young men from rich and powerful families sexually abusing women. In the wake of the Pollachi sexual assault case, this only comes across as exploitative. More so when we see the manner in which these scenes are filmed.
